Abstract
Alcuin wrote the treatise De virtutibus et vitiis liber (On Virtues and Vices) for Count Wido (Guy de Bretagne) around 799 or 800 AD. The book belongs to the genre of speculum, the author proposing in this book a monastic model: a spiritual battle between virtues and vices. In Alcuin’s treatise it is outlined the layman’s way of life according to a Christian model. The Romanian translation is based on the edition of
Migne’s Patrologia Latina, supplemented by two partial editions and more recent transcriptions. For the translation of the biblical quotations present in Alcuin’s text, the Bible or Holy Scripture was used.
