At the suggestion of Maria Subi, a colleague of mine during our student years and professor G. I. Tohăneanu’s loyal alumna, the translation project of De rosis nascentibus is born, poem which is included in the Appendix Vergiliana. The lyrical discourse uttered by an explicit fictitious voice presents itself as the minute description of a flowery landscape which centers the emblematic image of the rose, discourse which ends in the Epicurean urging carpe… florem, thus shining a light on a the Vergilian poetic motif fugit irreparabile tempus. The two translation alternatives present in this homage volume come together as a bucolic certamen which, so we hope, will delight the readers.
